Often referred to simply as "conference," the Pacific South-West Regional Conference (PSWRC) is an annual gathering of university students from civil engineering schools in Southern California, Arizona, Nevada, and Hawaii. It provides a fun and friendly atmosphere for students to meet and interact, and it also provides a competitive environment for students to show off their analytical, creative, and even physical skills through various technical and athletic contests.
Four of the featured events at the conference are the steel bridge, concrete canoe, seismic design, and surveying competitions. Students spend many months of hard work preparing for these events, and the projects conclude by putting the students' design concepts to real-life tests in the form of actual bridge loading, concrete canoe races, shake table testing, and on-site field measurements.
The 2006 PSWRC was hosted by UCLA last spring, and this year's will be at UCSD. Prior to that, conference trips have taken us to Arizona, Hawaii, and even Las Vegas. Conferences are memorable and enjoyable experiences that come highly recommended for all students interested in civil engineeing. They're always a lot of fun, and this year's should be no exception.
