    Letter From The President

    Dear Students, Alumni, and Faculty,

It is with great pleasure that I present our recently updated and redesigned UCLA ASCE website. I invite you to spend some time learning more about the many activities currently underway.

I would like to congratulate all of our project teams for their hard work throughout the year. Their dedication paid off as we had one of our most successful performances at the Pacific Southwest Regional Conference. Five of our projects placed third or higher, and UCLA finished third overall out of 18 schools. Most impressive, our Concrete Canoe and Steel Bridge teams both earned bids to their respective national competitions.

I would like to send my biggest thanks to our ASCE officers for their strong commitment this year. I am truly grateful for having had the privilege to lead such a talented and motivated group of officers. I would also like to extend a special thanks to our C&EE faculty, who have been instrumental in our success, especially our Faculty Advisor Professor Scott Brandenberg and Department Chair Professor J.S. Chen. As always, we thank our C&EE alumni for their continued support and guidance in helping our chapter secure industry sponsorship as well as providing insightful feedback on our projects.

Lastly, I would like to thank all 155 of our dedicated members for their commitment to UCLA ASCE this past year. I would also like to invite all returning students interested in becoming more active in UCLA ASCE to consider one of the many leadership opportunities next year - from leading projects to organizing events, there is something for everyone. To learn more, please email asce@seas.ucla.edu or ask one of our officers.

Please feel free to email me at pjonna@gmail.com as I am always eager to hear your ideas and suggestions. Thank you for your support, we look forward to a strong finish to the year.

    Concrete Frisbee Team 2008

2008 has been a great year for Concrete Frisbee. Thanks to everyone's hard work in the planning, construction, development, and competition portions of the project, the Concrete Frisbee team earned a 2nd place title at the PSWRC. At the conference, Doug Lauder and Benji Baker threw the Frisbee an impressive distance of 153 feet with an accuracy of 84%.
Now that the conference is over, director Paolo Baltar is looking for next year's team to push forward even more. A detailed project report of this year is to be published soon, documenting the project's successes and things to improve upon. Paolo says, "My hope is that it will help next year's team create a First place Frisbee."

    Concrete Sports: Casting is Underway

    Posted February 22, 2008, 8:42 pm

Concrete Frisbee is taking an innovative direction this year. A very intricate mold made of Polyurethane has enabled us to create smooth curves and detailed inlays.
After a few promising tests and a number of prototypes, we're on our way to making the final product to compete at Conference. A new mold has been cast, and we will be making new Concrete Frisbees in the near future.
As the product reaches its final stages, testing and throwing practice can begin in preparation for competition. There's plenty of work to be done. Please don't hesitate to ask questions or get involved.
